‘Animal Crossing’ Art Guide: How To Spot Fake Art, Paintings And Statues

Redd is now a regular fixture in the world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The sly fox first appeared around the same time as Nature Day, and now he regularly putters up in his smoke-belching trawler hawking paintings, statues, and unique furniture, trying to pass off a fake Mona Lisa next to blue jar of protein powder. The trick is this: he sells both real and fake art, and telling the difference can be quite difficult without an Art History degree. I’ve written about this before, but since then we’ve had some more information about his behavior, and wanted to get a definitive guide out there. So, here’s what you need to know about Redd, his paintings, his statues, and how to outmaneuver him.
Getting Redd and Expanding the Museum: You’ll need to satisfy the requirements to open up the Art Gallery in the museum before Redd will start appearing on your island. This means you need to donate a total of 60 bugs, fish and fossils to Blathers, which shouldn’t be all that hard. After that, Blathers will tell you that he will now take art donations.
The next day, you’ll find Redd wandering around your island. He’ll sell you one real piece of art, which you can give to Blathers and trigger the upgrade to build a Art Gallery expansion to the Museum.
From then on, Redd will appear randomly on your northern beach, which might be a little out of the way. He shows up in a trawler, and sometimes it takes a good long while between visits. Filling up the gallery will take a while.
Buying Real and Fake Art: This is the meat of it. Redd sells both real and fake art, and if you want to donate it to Blathers, it has to be real. Some of it is easy to spot, some of it is incredibly difficult.
You can only buy one piece of art a day, though there may be more than one real piece of art in the mix. Once you buy it, Redd will ship it to you the next day.
Haunted Art: The fake art isn’t all bad! It’s just a question of what you value, I suppose. Some of the fakes are haunted, and they’ll do weird things when you display them. A painting might open and close its eyes, or a statue might float. We haven’t quite got a full handle on the list of full possible hauntings, but it seems to be broad.

You can’t donate it to Blathers, but you can always display it in your own home. Remember, you can still only buy one piece a day, so you may need to choose between something Blathers will accept and something a little weirder.
