Animal Crossing: New Horizons will celebrate New Year's Eve with a countdown event on Dec. 31. Here's a complete guide.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is ending 2020 in style. Starting at 5 a.m. on Dec. 31, Resident Services will close so Isabelle and Tom Nook can set up a countdown event in the plaza, which includes a massive clock, prizes, gifts and more.
Players are first alerted to the countdown event through a bulletin board post from Isabelle on Dec. 27. Then in her daily announcements on New Year's Eve, Isabelle can be seen wearing a Happy New Year top hat and a tuxedo coat, and she'll talk about the holiday. Once players don their party attire, they can head straight to the plaza for New Year's Eve festivities that last all day in-game.
New Year's Items In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Starting Dec. 27, New Horizons players can acquire four special New Year's Eve items from the Nook Shopping app, either in their NookPhone or at the kiosk in Resident Services. The Sparkling Cider item can be held and used to make a toast when the player presses A. Alternately, it can be displayed for decoration or dropped for someone else to pick up and use.
Three other food items -- New Year's Noodles, Berliner and Twelve-Grape Dish -- are limited time, non-interactive offers that can be displayed or gifted, just like other small furniture. None of these items can be cataloged and they can only be purchased through Nook Shopping until Dec. 31.
On New Year's Eve, players can acquire a light stick and a New Year's Hat or a New Year's Silk Hat from Isabelle and Tom Nook, respectively. The light stick only comes in yellow, but the festive hats each come in eight colors (blue, green, light blue, orange, pink, purple, red and yellow). Note: Tom Nook will only have one type of hat in four available colors on any given island, so players may want to coordinate with friends to visit each other and collect the rest.
Starting New Year's Day (Jan. 1), players can acquire seven additional items through Nook Shopping to celebrate the transition from 2020 to 2021, several of which have cultural ties:
2021 Celebratory Arch -- This balloon arch bears the Gregorian calendar's number for the new year and gives luck to anyone who walks through it carrying their hopes and dreams in their heart
Kadomatsu -- A bamboo signpost to welcome Toshigami-sama, a god of the new year, into each house to bless it
Kagamimochi -- "Mirror mochi" is an offering to Toshigami-sama that is broken open and eaten on Jan. 11 to share the spirit within for good health
New Year’s Shimekazari -- These rope decorations purify the home and welcome Toshigami-sama
Olivier Salad -- A staple of Russian New Year's traditions created by Lucien Olivier at the end of the 19th century; there is no official recipe
Yut Nori -- This traditional Korean board game is played with wooden sticks instead of dice
Zodiac Ox Figurine -- This decoration brings good fortune for the Year of the Ox
