The best start ever for a Nintendo Switch title was set recently. Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold 11.77 million copies in just 12 days, quickly eclipsing all other entries in the Animal Crossing Series. It features a deserted island getaway. The island does not stay deserted for long as the player helps the island grow, adding shops and a museum, and encouraging talking animals to move to the island. Players can craft items, plant trees, and flowers, and generally customize their island as they see fit.
Different NPCs will visit the island each day, but there is one who does not so much visit as wash up on the shore. When walking along the beach, players can encounter an unconscious seagull named Gulliver. After prodding him awake, he tells the player that he fell off his boat and needs help to find communicator parts to contact his crew.
Now, with version 1.3.0, players may have a slightly different encounter. They will see Gulliver washed up on the shore as usual, although this time he might be wearing a pirate outfit instead of his usual sailor uniform. Upon talking to him, players learn that it is not Gulliver, but Captain Gullivarrr, a totally different character! That might sound like a joke, but functionally it is true, the game does treat him as a separate character. Both the sailor version of Gulliver and the pirate Gullivarrr can show up on different weekdays (weekends are reserved for K.K. Slider and Daisy Mae).
Appropriately, Gullivarrr talks like a pirate, or at least the popular portrayal of one. He has a different mission for the player as well. As Gullivarrr searches for his communicator to contact his crew, he realizes that it must have slipped from his pocket and is somewhere underwater. Gullivarrr tasks the player to search for it, which takes advantage of the new swimming mechanic.
First the player must wear a wetsuit, then enter the water and swim around until they find bubbles. If they dive down by pressing the Y button, they will see a shadow on the ocean floor. The shadow for the communicator will be small and will not move as the player dives for it. If it matches that description, then there is a good chance that it will be the communicator. If not, continue searching. From there, the player returns the communicator to Gullivarrr, and as before he will be there for the rest of the day and send the player a gift by mail the next day. These gifts, aptly, have a pirate theme, and can include pirate furniture and clothing.
